THE RAMNATH TEMPLE
Ramnath and Shantadurga were near neighbors in their original 16th century settings in Salcete area are now only a short distance apart. The temple of Ramnath is basically a shiva shrine. The orginal temple was at Loutolim in Salcete taluka which was destroyed during Inquisition in 1567. Although the linga takes pride of the place in the temple, Vishnu’s presence is strong throughout the temple, there even being an image of Laxmi Narayana within the sanctum sanctuary itself. The relationship is complex. Even the name can be interpreted Lord Rama the incarnation or lord Vishnu. Though with the linga as the principal image Ramnath is Shiva lord of Rama. The main building of the temple was completely renovated in 1905, resulting in its original proportions being badly distorted by a huge unsympathetic additional hall that over powers all else.
However all is compensated for the original small Mandapa. The glowing green and red on the floor and huge round pillars and the profuse yet orderly array of chandeliers and lanterns make a fitting setting for the exceptional wall of silver, a magnificent compositon that shields the inner sanctum. An arch way is flanked by closeness on which fine detail of animals like monkeys, deers and birds mingle between wines and branches of grapes. A row of naga head forms the first level of a many tiered exotic capitals as complex and eloquent as any rococo artist could have convinced.the arch way itself has borders of rounded each with a different theme deeply linked by a delicate floral pattern. Rosettes fill the space between arch and columns which rest on pedestals, decorated with rectangular panels of bas religion an array of guardian gods or hanuman vigilant as usual in their position on either side of the arch way.
